This holiday
falls on Tuesday, and I’ve been hearing fireworks going on since last Thursday.
Yes, it’s annoying because most of the dogs in the neighborhood are having
fits, including mine. There’s not a lot of sleeping going on at my house.
However, this
makes me wonder. Are these people celebrating the Fourth of July or are they
celebrating the fireworks? Is it just an excuse to do something loud and exciting?
I could go
into great detail about the occasion of our country’s independence, but if the
story wasn’t learned in school, what’s the point?
When I grew
up we celebrated on the holiday, the
fourth day of July, and it renewed our patriotism. It was, and is, a reminder that
this country fought for its independence from a foreign power.
Our military
has continued to fight for freedom, and along with remembering and celebrating
the reason for this special day, we should also remember the men and women who
sacrificed so we could be what we are today.
My mother and
father were very patriotic, and it rubbed off on me – so am I.
My husband
was a patriot, too. One year he brought home a red, white and blue sign and
hung it on the front door. It said, “A Proud American Lives Here… With His
Little Miss Liberty”. One day I hope to pass that sign on to another patriot
who has a little Miss Liberty at home.
There’s a lot
going on in America right now – some good and some bad – but I hope in the end
people will stop bickering and remember that the Fourth of July represents a
time in history when people earned the right to be free.
HAPPY FOURTH
OF JULY!

I'm not promoting a book this week -- just patriotism.
Marja,
ReplyDeleteEvery year as the fireworks explode all around me, I think the same thing: Do those people even know why we celebrate the Fourth of July? I'm sure many do but I'm just as sure many don't, which is sad. In any case, Happy Fourth!
I heard a young man asked what year our independence took place, Pat. His answer? 1984! Happy Fourth to you, too!
DeleteHappy 4th, Marja! So far, I haven't heard any fireworks going off around here but I do expect to see fireworks off in the distance tomorrow night.
ReplyDeleteLOL Count your blessings, Pat. We've had fireworks every night since Thursday. I won't bother to go into the dogs' reactions. Happy Fourth!
DeleteNever mind fireworks! I want to hear some good Sousa march music. "Washington Post." "National Emblem" Even "Under the Double Eagle."
ReplyDeleteLet us work to keep our independence..
Amen to that, Dac! Independence is what it's all about. Thank you so much for commenting!
DeleteGreat blog, Marja! Sadly, I think the Fourth has become a time for food (outdoors) and sales in the stores. Independence is precious and I'm grateful that I was born in America. I hope you have a happy holiday.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Dorothy! I wish today's kids could know what it was like when we were young. They've missed so much. Thank you for commenting!
DeleteHappy Fourth of July, Marja. I think what you're describing is true of so many of our holidays. I wish patriotism were back in style and we had more of it around.
ReplyDeleteI agree completely, Marilyn! We'll bring patriotism back! Thank you so much for commenting!
DeleteLots of fireworks going off around here since Thursday. My poor dog has been vibrating and has attached herself to one of my legs. Glad tomorrow will be the last day. Happy Fourth, Marja.
ReplyDeleteLOL Don't hold your breath, Evelyn. Come Wednesday and someone will want to shoot off whatever's left of their fireworks. Happy Fourth to you, too!
DeleteWell said, Marja, about patriotism and fireworks. Happy 4th!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Maggie! And Happy Fourth to you, too! Thank you for stopping in!
